Do you backup your websites?
Last week I had a customer use my Facebook fan page to let me know that my website was not working. Yikes! Sure enough, when I went to the site, there was an error message. So, I contacted my host and haven’t gotten anywhere. They are working on it. In fact, it might be my fault that the whole server is down! Double Yikes!
I have several sites, including an e-commerce store where I’ve sold hand-made mineral makeup for about 8 years now. I have another site that I started when I first got out of coaching school, but I haven’t done much with it lately in fact, I don’t even think I opened it in the last 3 months. This is a problem.
Because I hadn’t updated the site, including WordPress software and theme updates, some hacker or hacker’s program was able to enter the site and wreak havoc. They may have taken down the server where all of my sites, along with others were stored. Why do they do this? I wish I understood. I feel guilty for having not updated the site and allowed for a security breach. But, I truly forgot about the site since I’ve been focused on other things. (sick dogs, car wrecks, and ill children)
The thing I’m kicking myself for though, is that I don’t have backups of the sites that were taken down! I could easily have backed them up and moved them to a new server. I use this awesome plugin called BackupCreator to back up my sites, and if I’d used it on those sites, they wouldn’t have been down for a week.
This plugin is awesome because it backs up and creates a duplicate file of everything – everything – included on a WordPress site. Databases, graphics, themes, settings, plugins, and content – it’s all saved, duplicated and wrapped up into a file that can be re-loaded to another installation of WordPress or back onto a site that got broke.
It’s pretty easy to do, and I’ve done it for practice with a couple of my other websites.
But, I forgot to do it for the three that were on that server. So, I either have to wait for the host to see if they can restore, or I have to start from scratch. That will probably turn into another blog post.
Do you backup? Is it enough?
I also offer the service of auto backups and site restores for your WordPress, self hosted sites. Just ask me about it.
